Understanding TVZ, Cape Town’s newest enigmatic idol

From rocking the stages at Cotton Fest to constantly dropping sublime music, not much is known about Cape Town’s rising Prince known as TVZ.

It was our challenge to link up with the Capetonian sensation and try to uncover who he is and what goes on in his mysterious world.

Firstly, who is the real TVZ?

Trust us when we say, there’s barely any information about the young talent from Cape Town, besides cryptic images or messages on his socials, so we had to break down who TVZ is.

“Firstly, my Name is Taz (TVZ).”

“I'm originally from Cape Town, born but not all raised and I've been out of South Africa as a kid and was able to grasp a slight understanding of the world around me.”

“Music was always around me and being brought up in a creative household and exposed to music at a young age by either my mom and I dancing or watching my dad play piano and DJ.”

“Over the years I decided to take charge, by tapping into being a DJ or producing beats, that's where I found the love of writing. At around 16 I made my first written and produced track and it was all up from there.”

Could you define your sound when it comes to your discography?

For those who follow TVZ’s music releases, it’s easy to pick up how versatile the virtuoso is, being able to switch up his abilities from singing beautiful melodies into having the gift to switch it up and flaunt his lyrical talent.

“In the very beginning of my career I've changed sounds and alternated flows in order to find my niche.”

“I've been able to grasp traditional (boom bap) hip hop and new wave sounds and I've stuck with it ever since.”

“But at first, I fell in love with old school, raw flow and technique-based hip hop. Old schemes made me the artist I am today, and I still incorporate it in my newer sounds.”

Your latest release “NOVELTY (VOL 1)” was a joy to experience. What did that project mean to you, and what does it mean for your future releases?

On the 23rd of June, TVZ dropped his three-track EP “NOVELTY (VOL 1)” which really impressed us. We wanted to understand what the story/message was behind the EP.

“Well, “NOVELTY (VOL.1)” is the first EP I have released as a small, "not you your usual listen" EP.”

“VOL.2 Is pure technique, typical intangible TVZ flows, scheme work unheard or unseen.”

“NOVELTY to me is an extension of me, my mind, my craft, and experiences throughout my career and life. NOVELTY translates me being my most unapologetic self.”

With a release of such quality, we needed to know what else was coming from the upcoming star.

“I have a new song coming on the 7th of July titled "ALASKAN COAT" which is a new wave/alt. R&B song.”

“A track you can play and never get tired of, a song you can keep in your playlist and have on rotation. As well as the music video for “ALASKAN COAT”...Then shortly after, I have another track coming. The drop is leaning towards September time called “AIN'T SO BAD”.”

Besides the music, what else interests you?

TVZ is a complete ghost, showing only what he wants to show to the public and majority of that is him and his music (which is totally understandable), however, we wanted to know what else occurs in his life.

“Personally, I've been a hustler since I was sixteen and I’m always trying new things, work, travel and meeting new people.”

“My interests are vast, whether it's hosting events, being on line ups, collaborations, and networking.”

“But mainly I'm perfecting my craft, I've got an amazing hidden team of people all around the globe waiting for the right time to show out.”

What’s the best part about being a musician in Cape Town and how do you keep motivated?

Being an artist isn’t too hard. It’s maintaining the motivation to keep pushing your sound and brand further which many suffer to preserve, so we had to know how TVZ is able to keep the fire burning.

“Best part of being an artist in general perspective, is being able to express, communicate and share stories, vibes, experiences that can be relatively relatable.”

“My recent song “SMILE” is a song that taps into the hardship that someone may not be able to see to the naked eye. And that's the beauty of music, being able to translate emotion into words and rhythm.”

“To stay in Cape Town, and be and artist can be difficult, a lot of rappers/artists tend to gather a crew of people that help one another rise up, whereas me, I'm on my own grind and was never able to clique up due to people wanting to see you do great but never be better than them. But then again, my motivation is proving myself right.”

An inspiring finish to an inspiring interview. We’re confident TVZ is next up to light up the music world and we’re all here for it.

If you have yet to check out his music, it’s all available on streaming platforms so check out the next big thing to come out of the Mother City.
